Long-Term Picks
The top ten stocks and top ten bond ETFs for a long-term retirement account, ranked by a transparent score computed from five years of real price history. Educational, not investment advice.
How the ranking works
Each candidate is scored from up to five years of monthly closes, pulled per symbol from free market feeds (Stooq and Yahoo Finance, whichever answers). The score blends the five-year annualized return (70%) with the trailing year (30%), minus a volatility penalty: stocks are docked half their annualized volatility, bond ETFs one and a half times theirs, since stability is why bonds are in a portfolio at all. The ten highest scores on each side make the list; mark a pick as invested and the next-ranked candidate takes its place.
The universe is thirty established large caps and fifteen broad taxable bond ETFs, curated for retirement accounts like an IRA or 401(k): tax-exempt municipal funds are excluded on purpose, since inside a retirement account their tax break is wasted. Returns are price returns only, which understates the bond list most, because income is the bulk of a bond fund's real return. For money you'll need sooner, Short-Term Picks ranks recent momentum and the steadiest places to park cash.
